Apple Store Down, New Product on the Way?

Apple usually shuts down and updates its store around important product announcements . . . and generally Apple shuts it down during the official announcements or events.

Once the event is over, the store usually opens with the new products ready to buy — new aluminum unibody MacBooks or new iPods, for example. But the store is down now, today, a Sunday . . . so what gives?

Hard to say. Incremental updates? Something big?

We’ll find out soon enough, of course!

UPDATE: So far, we’ve been unable to find any significant new products, but the shopping cart interface is much improved — mostly design tweaks to include a cleaner layout, product pics, etc., but the cart also features a zip code box that helps instantly calculate shipping without loading a new page. And when you enter a zip code, it also generates the estimated tax you’ll likely pay at checkout. It looks good and seems to work well.

Ooh, one more thing: try adding a few items to your cart, then view your cart, then remove an item. It’s just some slick eye-candy removal action, but still — nice.
